Google launched new app "Bolo"

Smartphone penetration expands in rural India, Google is hoping to piggyback on it to help the children with their reading skills. Company on Wednesday unveiled its new Bolo Android app that is a speech-based reading-tutor app aimed at rural kids, who would otherwise may not have access to a good education support system. Being released in India first, the Bolo app is now available for free via Google Play and can work offline. There is no word on when the app will be released in other markets.

As the government-back school system in most Indian states leaves a lot to be desired and it is often the only available avenue for getting an education in rural areas as well as for children from financially struggling families. Google is hoping to change that by using smartphones, which are increasingly becoming a common sight, even in rural areas.

Google says “We believe technology has the power to help transform teaching and learning, and have been actively directing our products, programs and philanthropy to ensure that all students are able to benefit from it,”

Bolo app helps the children improve their Hindi and English reading skills by encouraging them to read aloud. Comes with a large number of engaging stories, which the company hopes, will help the children in improving their comprehension skills. App has been designed to make sure that children don't need any help in using it and can read all by themselves. Google notes that all the reading material on the app is free and it is working with other companies to bring more content to Bolo. App relies on Google's speech recognition and text-to-speech technology.

Google has added in-app rewards and badges to Bolo as well as word games.

Google says the app includes an animated digital assistant called Diya. This assistant can read the text out loud for the children and even explain the meaning of the English text. Diya can speak English as well as Hindi, and will encourage the kids by giving them compliments when they finish a task.

App can be shared among many kids and provides a personalised experience to all. So, if a family has two siblings, they can both use the app and track their individual progress.

As per Google, the Bolo app is still in beta and the company will be working with its partners like Kaivalya, Room to Read, Saajha, and Pratham to further refine it and take the app to more children. Company has already carried out a controlled pilot for three months in 200 villages of Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district and it says that the initial results were encouraging.

This Bolo app can be downloaded from Google Play and works with all Android phones running KitKat or above. It comes with 16 preloaded stories and more can be downloaded. Overall size of the app is less than 50MB, which includes the speech modules and the entire experience.

TikTok fined $5.7 million for collecting data on children

World Popular video sharing app TikTok has agreed to pay $5.7 million to settle allegations which illegally collected personal information from children under the age of 13, such as names, email addresses and their location.
US Federal Trade Commission said in a statement on wednesday that the TikTok fine is a record for a child privacy case.

Popular TikTok, which belongs to $75 billion startup ByteDance, has more than half a billion users worldwide, giving it an international edge over other Chinese-owned social media platforms, which have struggled to expand outside their home market.US fine relates to Musical.ly, a video-sharing app Bytedance bought in 2017 and merged with TikTok last August.

As per investigation on Musical.ly had "uncovered disturbing practices, including collecting and exposing the location" of young children. Despite receiving thousands of complaints from parents, the company failed to comply with requests to delete information about underage children and held onto it longer than necessary, as per source.

Company on Wednesday introduced a "separate app experience" for younger US users in which they "cannot do things like share their videos on TikTok, comment on others' videos, message with users, or maintain a profile or followers."

App which launched in 2014, Musical.ly let users upload short videos of themselves lipsyncing to popular songs. For registering the app, people had to give an email address, phone number, username, first and last name, short bio and profile picture.

Collection of that personal information provided more than enough evidence for Musical.ly to see it was violating the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

Popular Musical.ly, which had more than 65 million registered users in the United States before it merged with TikTok, received thousands of complaints from parents saying their underage children had created an account without their knowledge. COPPA requires internet companies to obtain "verifiable parental consent" before collecting, using or disclosing personal information from children.

Earlier Disney (DIS) subsidiary Playdom was fined $3 million in 2011 for collecting and displaying children's information in multiplayer online games.

As Per TRAI Mobile users can send 200 SMSes per day

Good News for Indians: New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS) Mobile phone users will now be able to send upto 200 SMSes per day as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Tuesday raised the earlier imposed cap of 100 messages following requests from telcos and consumers. 'The authority has received representations from some of the service providers and consumers to increase the limit of 100 SMS per day per SIM. The authority has considered these representations and decided to increase the limit,' TRAI said in a statement.

At an effort to curb unsolicited commercial calls and messages, the regulator had in September restricted service providers from providing any SMS package or tariff plan permitting sending more than 100 SMSes per day per SIM. However, it had relaxed this restriction for some categories of users such as dealers of telecom operators, e-ticketing service providers and social networking sites. Besides, this restriction was not applicable on festivals. Earlier this month, the regulator had also imposed a termination charge of 5 paise per SMS on operators from whose networks commercial messages originate to further curb pesky messages.

Anodroid Phones under 10K

New Android phones releasing month after month, there can be no definitive way to declare a particular phone to be the best buy for too long. That's why we've made it a monthly habit to keep updating the Best Android phones to buy list, so that potential buyers have one place to seek advice.

Here is a growing number of options in this cost conscious smart phone range, with every manufacturer trying to one-up the other by marginally improving the features. As a rule of the thumb, I'm not even going to consider all those phones with resistive touch screens, and with good reason. As of now, we declare the newly launched Sam sung Galaxy Pop S5570 as the champion of the paisa vasool range. It's an upgrade to the popular Galaxy 5 i5500 model and it brings about some important changes -- the screen size is bumped up from 2.8 inches to 3.2 inches, although it still has the low QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) resolution. But for the price, we can forgive Sam sung of this sin. The camera resolution is upped from the pitiful 2 mega pixel to the not-so-pitiful 3.2 mega pixel. It still lacks auto focus and an LED flash; don't expect great photo quality from it.

Most important change is that it runs Android 2.2 Froyo from start, unlike the Galaxy 5 which still runs Android 2.1, with no clear update road map in sight. It may not be the most recent Gingerbread (2.3) version, but we still appreciate it running a fairly recent version, given how fast Google churns out OS updates every year. It still has the i5500's 600 MHz processor, and with the same QVGA resolution and the Froyo performance optimizations, you can expect the User Interface to fly swiftly. Apart from this, the Galaxy Pop also adds a proximity sensor and a compass to the package. Connectivity is sorted with 3.5G (HSDPA), Wi-fi 802.11n and A-GPS support. It sells for Rs. 9,000 -- the same price that its predecessor was sold at when launched. For the price, we think the Galaxy Pop S5570 is a good package for the Android lover who likes to hold back on splurging hard earned money.

Twitter redesigns

Twitter Inc. has redesigned its website for the first time in its four-year history to draw more users and get them to stay longer as it competes for advertising dollars with Internet rivals Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. The redesign, which will roll out to the website's 160 million users over the next several weeks, is intended to make the site easier and faster to use and to serve up more relevant content to users, executives said at a news conference at Twitter's San Francisco headquarters. Company Chief Executive Evan Williams said that the changes would allow users to get "more out of Twitter in a lot less time." As Twitter's popularity has spread since its 2006 introduction, the website has gotten a reputation for being difficult to use and for crashing too frequently. Twitter has been a victim of its own popularity — 370,000 new users sign up each day.

Twitter has lagged in finding ways to boost revenue. It recently launched new advertising formats and ramped up its sales force. Executives hope the redesign, which will make ads easier to view, will help Twitter better compete with Google and Facebook for advertisers. Users of the redesigned site will be able to see more information about the authors of Tweets — the Twitter messages that can be no more than 140 characters in length. Also, conversations between users will be able to be viewed, as will photos and videos referenced in updates. One of the biggest changes to the Twitter site is that users will be able to see two panes instead of a single timeline of updates. They will be able to scroll through the timeline in the left pane without clicking back and forth to see more information about updates or their authors. Twitter executives said deals had been crafted with 16 photo and video sites, including YouTube and Flickr, to have their visual content embedded on Twitter.com.

Flush with venture capital funding that valued the 250-employee company at $1 billion, top executives have been focusing their efforts on making the Twitter experience simpler and better. Williams said he has spent much of his time over the last five months on the redesign. "This is a complete revamp," he said. Twitter's audience growth in the United States has tapered off in the last year, but internationally has continued to grow at a rapid clip, ComScore Inc. analyst Andrew Lipsman said. Twitter also continues to show strong user engagement, Lipsman said. Forrester Research social media analyst Augie Ray called the announcement a "significant evolution." "The long-term effects could be substantial as Twitter focuses on powering growth by improving Twitter consumption," Ray said.
